Clouded leopards, being an odd link between big and small cats, can neither roar like the large cats or purr like the small ones  Instead, they make a variety of chuffing, mewing, growling, hissing, and snorting noises.  A particular sound that they make is called the “prusten”, which is a low-intensity snorting noise made when two animals are approaching each other with friendly intentions.  Tigers, snow leopards, and jaguars are the only other cats known to make this sound.  Clouded leopards are also known for making loud, long, moaning cries, usually while standing at the tops of trees or small hills.  This moan may be for territorial purposes or to attract mates.
